MMA Comes to New York, Finally!

MMA Tamdan McCroryMMA, or Mixed Martial Arts, has finally become legal in New York. Finally. On March 22, 2016 the NY State Assembly voted to pass Bill No. S05949, by more than 4 to 1 in favor.   On April 14th of 2016, the bill was officially signed which establishes protocols for combative sports and authorizes mixed martial arts events in this state. New York was the last state to legalize MMA.  Now that MMA is legal in all 50 states, organizers like the UFC and Bellator are already planning events in venues like Madison Square Garden (UFC on Nov 12) and Barclays Center.

Bellator President Scott Coker had this to say regarding the landmark announcement:

“As someone who has been promoting combat sports for more than 30 years, this is a very exciting time for mixed martial arts.  We at Bellator MMA are very much looking forward to hosting an event in the ‘Crown Jewel of America,’ New York.  Two Bellator champions, Liam McGeary and Marcos Galvao call New York home and I know it means a great deal to the both of them, as it does for the entire promotion.”

Guro Eric Winfree brings up a good point and is glad that New York State finally legalized MMA. “MMA is a combination of boxing, Muay Thai, and Jiu Jitsu.  Boxing is legal in NY. Muay Thai competitions are legal in NY. Jiu Jitsu is legal in NY, but if you do all three together, it’s illegal? That does not make any sense,” said Winfree.

What does this mean to us?

Since MMA is now legal in New York, this means that we have a better chance of seeing a live event and supporting our brothers who are competing in this arena, like Tamdan McCrory and Jon Jones.  This also gives local fighters now have more of a chance to break into the fight scene because they will have venues to fight at instead of having to travel hundreds of miles to have an opportunity to fight.
